Donna Reynolds

“Sorry I’m late. I got caught in traffic.” Donna hurried toward the facial room, a big smile on her face. “I’ve been looking forward to this all day!”

We both know the routine well. With every Bioelements facial, you get a choice of either a hand or foot massage. With Donna, I don’t even have to ask. She enjoys having her hands massaged.

Donna has been having facials at the spa for almost as long as I have been in business. She started out very sporadic. But gradually, she made it a priority.

But here’s the funny part. It’s not because she has problem skin. Far from it. Donna has very good skin. She makes time each month because the facials are so relaxing. It’s her “me” time.

“I tell all my friends they don’t know what they’re missing,” she said. And I have to agree. I’ve explained countless times what I do in a facial, but the description always sounds so mechanical.

A facial is truly experiential. Rhythmic movement of the esthetician’s hands, gentle steam, warm towels, and soft aromas heighten your pleasure. And then there are the results. Most people can’t believe what they see.

Recently, Donna joined the Renaissance Club. It made sense. She’s dedicated to taking one hour a month for herself. It also doesn’t hurt that she’ll receive special savings and privileges as a club member.

Hooray for Donna! She’s got a busy work life, two growing kids and a husband. But she remembered the most important part of her life: herself. One hour a month recharges her batteries, helps to get her grounded, so that she can keep up with her busy life.

NOTES FROM SUSAN'S FAR SIDE
After 52 years, the nightmare has finally begun. And it all started with a desire to buy simple summer shorts for the season.

I scooped up several pairs of adorable shorts at a local department store, and headed to the dressing room.

I couldn’t wait to try them on. My fantasy of looking like a super model in everything I tried on soon burst.. I either saw stick legs in mile wide shorts. Or, a bulging middle in fabric gasping for air.

Despondent, I headed back to the floor and grabbed up another armload. This time, I realized  it was a vicious plot by the clothing industry to destroy what was  left of my shrinking self-esteem.

There were the low-rise-high-cut leg shorts that all the teenage girls wear. (After all, I AM still a teen at heart, right?)

I looked like the Road Runner.

Then, there was the waist-cut-knee-length peddlepushers. (Or whatever they call them these days.) With legs as skinny as mine, I figured, longer is better. But that’s when desperation turned to panic. The shorts creamed, MIDDLE AGED!

Yes, they toned down this little bulge I’m fighting. But from the back, I looked like one of those men that belt their pants just under their armpits. My pants cut up my butt so it looked like I had this sinister smile.

In all, I tried on twenty pairs of shorts…I went home with only one lonely pair of denims. And I promised my husband I would only wear those for gardening.

So, what’s the moral of the story? Well, there are actually two. The first is, middle-age comes to everyone. Even skinny little white girls. The second is, age brings wisdom. The more I cover up, the better I look.

So, I’m sticking to my treasured capris and a longer shirt. And I’ll gladly let everyone tell me that I don’t look my age at all.
