The Traveler’s Gift
The ad read, “Travel is more than going from A to B. Travel should take you places.” I thought it was a silly slogan, another Madison Avenue “creative” that was neither creative nor an advertisement.
But I have to admit, my recent trip to Arizona did take me places, but I don’t think it’s what the ad had in mind. I like a little traveling; it helps me step outside of myself, take a look around and see what I’ve taken for granted, ignored, or worse, just plain forgotten.
This trip was a lesson in respecting “my little voice.” If any of you are old enough to remember the TV show, Magnum, P.I., you’ll remember how the character relied on his intuition to solve cases. Magnum called it his little voice.
I’m strongly intuitive but I don’t allow my intuition to work with me. I fight it and hard. I’ll call it fear or silliness, anything but what it is, a hand on the shoulder to guide me. And that hand tried to guide me even before the trip began.
It’s simple things really. My little voice told me to take a sweater. I said no, I’m going to Arizona. It’s going to be in the mid-80’s. I don’t need a sweater. But I did.
My intuition told me to take my driver’s license with me but I didn’t. So I had to go through extra security at the airport and a whole lot of ribbing from my sister! (I think that was worse!)
My little voice said, “Don’t eat the dessert. Go back to the room and chill.” I ate the dessert and couldn’t sleep most of the night. The next day began our 18-hour trip back home. I was exhausted.
I had no idea how much help I received during each day of my life. With the noise of my own self-chatter gone, I could clearly hear Magnum’s “little voice” guiding me through the day.
I had to fly across the country to get re-acquainted with my intuition. I traveled to the desert to learn that when I’m fearful of something or someone, it may not be that I’m a coward. It’s my intuition telling me to “Beware!”
When a decision “feels” right even though it doesn’t go with the norm, it’s my intuition giving me the jump.
I’ll be okay. That’s something I forget a lot! With all the loud voices competing for my time, I let that still, clear voice get lost.
Even if you’re not planning to take a trip any time soon, take a step back. Don’t let those motor mouths in your head run your life. Breathe. Watch how they quiet down and the stillness, the direction that you crave will embrace you.
Listen as it says, “Welcome! I’ve been waiting for you!”
